This week, we’re reading letters 9 and 10 of The Screwtape Letters. The accompanying audio clip is from letter 9 of the audiobook. Below are some discussion questions for those reading along!
Discussion Questions:
How do you navigate periods of spiritual dryness or dullness in your life? What practices or perspectives help you stay connected during these times?
Screwtape suggests that “a moderated religion is as good as no religion at all.” What do you think this means, and do you agree or disagree? Why?
In Letter 10, Screwtape claims, “all mortals tend to turn into the thing they are pretending to be.” Similarly, C.S. Lewis writes in Mere Christianity: “Do not waste time bothering whether you ‘love’ your neighbor; act as if you did. As soon as we do this we find one of the great secrets. When you are behaving as if you loved someone, you will presently come to love him.” How have you experienced this “great secret” in your own life?1
