C.S. Lewis on Philia
19

This week, we shared Rediscovering Love with C.S. Lewis—a post that explored the backstory of The Four Loves and what Lewis was experiencing in his personal life during its creation. This audio excerpt is from Lewis’s original broadcast recordings for the Episcopal Radio Hour.

In this segment, Lewis unpacks the beauty and depth of Philia—the love shared between true friends. One of my favorite lines from the recording is, “In a circle of true friends, each man stands for nothing but what he is.”

It’s remarkable to hear Lewis's voice behind words that will seem so familiar to readers of The Four Loves. As he continues to discuss what makes a group of friends so valuable, I can’t help but feel we catch a small glimpse of his own feelings towards his inner circle.

Is this the first time you’re hearing C.S. Lewis’s voice, or have you listened to his recordings before? And what do you think are the marks of true friendship? Share your thoughts in the comments!

If this excerpt leaves you wanting more, the audio recordings are available for purchase here.
